Can you tell us anything about the chess set? The pieces are as you describe
them. The Orkneys were wild and woolly places at Henry's time.  The
inhabitants raised feuding to an art form.  Whoever the Earl was had have a
firm hand to deal with the unrully populace.

The Earl of Caithness has kindly pointed out to me that at one time Sigurd
Magnusson was created King of Orkney and the Isles in the spring of 1099 by
his father, King Magnus III of Norway.  I suppose to beef up control of the
area.
