Sinclairs and Stewarts

  Sinclairs and Stewarts

        King Robert III of Scotland (around 1340 - 1406; King 1390 - 1406)
sent his eight-year-old son James, on a ship to France for safekeeping.
France was the traditional ally of Scotland. James was accompanied by Henry
Sinclair ( - 1418), a son of Prince Henry Sinclair (around 1345 to 1400),
Earl of Rosslyn and Jarl of the Orkney Islands who traveled to eastern Canada
and the northeastern United States from 1398 - 1399. An English ship
captured the Scots ship. James and Henry Sinclair were kept in prison in
England. Henry Sinclair was allowed to go back and forth between Scotland
and England. James had to remain in England until 1424, when he was
permitted to return to Scotland. He became King James I of Scotland (1394 -
1437 He was assassinated by his own nobles; King 1406-1437). He was the
first of the Stewart Kings of Scotland.
King James I sent his daughter, Princess Margaret, to France in 1436 so
she could marry the Dauphin, the heir to the French throne. She traveled on
a ship to France with William Sinclair, the grandson of Prince Henry
Sinclair. The Scots ship narrowly escaped capture by an English ship which
was diverted from pursuing the Scots ship because they (the English) were
attacked by a Spanish sship. This fortuitous event enabled the Scots ship to
land safely at the port of La Rochelle, France. William Sinclair built the
Sinclairs' church, Rosslyn Chapel, in 1453. William Sinclair was born in
1404 and died in 1482.
William Sinclair's daughter married Alexander, Duke of Albany, a son of
King James II of Scotland (1430 - 1460; King 1437 - 1460 killed when a Scots
cannon blew up while the Scots army was beseiging Roxburgh Castle in southern
Scotland).
There were many Sinclairs involved in the life of Mary Queen of Scots,
daughter of King James V of Scotland. Other people have already given
information about this subject on the discussion list.
