DNA tests can establish common ancestry over several millenia. For example,
the claim by the Cohens of descent from the priethood in Jerusalem may well
have more than a degree of truth as DNA tests have established that this
family group do have a common ancestor dating back considerbly more than two
millenia. However descent from known individual ancestors can only be
demonstrated to the extent that all such direct descendants share the same
DNA patterns. If there are abberations from a known pattern, then legitimacy
is in question.
