His name was Patrick Sinclair (1736-1820) and he was born in Lybster,
Caithness. The local residents of Lybster are quite proud of this pier and of
Patrick. Patrick went to Canada with the army and the Great Lakes fascinated
him. In 1775 he was appointed Lieutenant Governor and Superintendant of
Michilimackinac in Quebec. He oversaw the purchase of Mackinac Island from the
Chippewas Indians and was instrumental in building the stone fort on this
island. He organised expeditions against the Spainish in St. Louis and spent
all his official funds in keeping the Indians loyal to Britian. The military
refused to pay his drafts and Sinclair died impoverished at Lybster
