Dear Sinclair: Sir William St. Clair of Rosslyn who died in 1778 had married Cordelia, daughter of Sir George Wishart Baronet of Clifton Hall by whom he had three sons and five daughters all of whom died except the daughter Sarah. Lady Sarah St. Clair of Rosslyn married Peter Wedderburn of Chester Hall. They had two children: A son, Alexander who became Alexander Wedderburn St. Clair, first Earl of Rosslyn; and a daughter Janet who married Sir Henry Erskine, 5th Baronet of Alva. When Alexander died without issue, his nephew Sir James St. Clair Erskine (son of Janet Wedderburn and Henry Erskine above) became 2nd Earl of Rosslyn The present line descends directly from this point on.
