double F

in the past 24 hours I have for the first time come upon the double F
spelling, that is,

A Frasier who spelled his name Ffrasier and a list of Irish Cromwellian
Adventurers 1642-1646 www.exis.net/ahd/monaghan/advntrs.htm

:
                Ffalder
                Ffane
                Ffarmer
                Ffarrington
                Ffarthing
                Ffarwell
                Ffawne
                Ffeatherton
                Ffielde
                Ffenton
                Fferris
                Ffewster
                Ffigg
                Ffinch
                    Ffisher

Does the "Ff" represent a sound that "F" can not duplicate?
