Re: AUTOPOST: Guest Book Entry [dietmar noss]

Hello Dietmar
The answer to your question is that the word NOSS is of Norse extraction and
means NOSE of land, or promontory -point of land, hence lighthouse on noss
or Noss Lighthouse.
The local farmer who has now retired and sold his 700 acre farm, was
christened William, Noss, Clyne, after the area that his parents farmed, and
incidentally this man has been a tower of strength and knowledge in his
support for our plans to save Sinclair Girnigoe Castles.
As you will already know I am sure, the name CLYNE is a sept of the Clan
Sinclair and clan septs were of two classes: clansmen of the clan who were
related by blood and formed separate branches, and individuals and groups
who sought and obtained the protection of the clan chief.
This resulted in a clan having septs with different surnames, and also
persons with the same surname could be attached to different clans. I hope
that this little snippet has been of use.
Best wishes
Yours Aye
Ian Sinclair
