   1498:  Girolamo  Savonarola  executed, Domenican friar and reformer in
   Florence.  Angered  Pope  Alexander VI and the Duke of Milan. Governed
   Florence  briefly  in  the  form  of  a democratic republic. Viciously
   persecuted,   tried,   tortured,  and  sentenced  to  death  by  papal
   commissioners on fabricated evidence.
