What do these words mean?

Since doing research on the Sinclair name for my husband, Bill, I have
caught the bug. Now reading a novel, 3 words came up, that I have no real
concept of what they mean---a village  is 600years old---" at one time it
was known as a  !) thanage and later as a 2) barony ,now it's what they call
a 3) royal burgh ". Are these the  size of the village or the times in which
they were located?
