The Sinclairs of Dun were probably the first Sinclairs in Caithness.

David I of Scotland (1080-1153) granted the Sinclairs lands in
Caithness, Banffshire, Herbertshire (Stirling) and additional land
in Midlothian during his reign.  His father, Malcolm Canmore, had
granted Rosslyn to William 'the Seemly' St Clair.
