You see Sally, we had sheep and cattle wandering around without fences in 
the outback areas, in the early days; and we had shepherds, etc.  But if 
there were calves or yearlings who had not been branded ( or even if they 
had) it was not unknown for them to be duffed, ie rustled.  THis is 
according to my father, who was born in 1898. He grew wheat in the Mallee, 
a very dry area in Northern Victoria, but he had many of these stories.
