   [3]Tomorrow:  March 1. In 1845: Texas joins U.S.. Democrat James Polk
   had been elected U.S. president the previous year saying "fifty-four
   forty (54°40") or fight!" meaning he intended to take over Oregon and
   annex Texas as ``manifest destiny.''.
