In continuing the discussion.... Christopher Columbus could be considered an American hero since he shamelessly exploited, without any consideration for the native population, resources and an economy which he didn't at all understand or care about. He also forged ahead with promises to his backers that he had no way of knowing he could keep, and, in fact, didn't. Typically American! And a wee bit cynical on my part.
