Dear James, I do not want, nice guy that I am, want to rain on your parade but I am probably going to. (nothing personal) As stated..Leif traveled down the east coat and may have reached the present day Carolina's. Columbus never even set foot on the Americas. He bounced around the Caribbean, which was unexpectantly in his way of the spices of India. He was not on a mission to colonize, he wanted to prove the world was round and bring home the booty while avoiding The Cape Of Good Hope and those pesky land routes....Had Chris touched these continents, we may well be residents of North and South Columbia. (Heck, if I were him and did That, I would insist!) Also, back to the far east theme for a minute..another name for the Caribbean is the West Indies...and the people here?..Indians... I do not understand how a Portuguese sailor in the employ of a Spanish Monarch is an excellent example of an American hero but I have nothing against it. If I sound glib, I do not mean to. I am trying to sound light-hearted, but my years of teaching history sometimes gets in the way. Thank you for coming on to the site, James...remember..you could be right or you could be wrong, but you learn all the time. I know, I am wrong alot and learn daily. Regards...Gord James Goff wrote: > > I recently graduated from high school a few weeks back and have been > in both public and private schools, so I will add what I was taught > about the discovery of America.
