I have to agree, not that I am that old, but that we were taught that it was
the Vikings (not necessarily Leif)along with mentioning Greeks and Egyptians
somewhere. I don't remember being taught anything about Columbus, except
that when the Spanish and Portuguese arrived it all went down hill

This is an interesting thread about Leif Ericsson discovering N America.
Way down here at the edge of the earth we were also taught that and it
always surprised me to hear anyone thought anything different. (And it is a
looong time since I was young!)
