Actually, maize is a derivative of a Spanish word maiz, which they got from Taino mahiz. The Taino were Arawakan Indians of the West Indies. Locally, we were taught that "maize" was a Native American word. Not so, as it turns out. Isn't it just a-maiz-ing what one can learn even at my ripe old age.
