It is a name from the Isle of Lewis in the Scottish Hebrides. The ancient history of the Isles indicates that they were a bastion of the Druid tradition with a number of "Colleges" located there. The name Archibald is also a name common to the Clans and Lords of the Isles (Islay and Argyll in particular). It also has a connotation alluding to a Druid title which indicates a pre-Norman/Norse origin to the name.
