I don`t have first hand experience of travelling this year but due to major
repairs to the rail system here in the U.K. there are a lot of long delays,
some people suffering 10/12 hour delays. Even the time tables are not any
g`tee that there will be a train!
I would suggest that you check out the cost of flying from London to
Scotland & then renting a car in Scotland.
I would feel very sorry for you if all you managed to see on your vacation
was railway stations, even if some are fine examples of Victorian
architecture [& services!]
I hope you enjoy the trip however you travel.
