Plantations:

The Sinclairs bought Ni'ihau Island, Hawaii, in 1864 for $10,000 from King
Kamehamehe IV, following an
unusually wet winter that had turned the normally arid scrubland into lush
green pastures and filled low-lying
depressions with great expanses of fresh water.  The next year the grasses
withered and the lakes dried up
and the Sinclairs, realising that Ni'ihau would never yield great riches
began buying more productive land on
Kaua'i which lies some 17 miles away across the choppy Kaulakahi Channel.

The U.S. Navy is now interested in buying the isolated island of Ni'ihau as
a possible site for launching test rockets.
