Dear Bob,
It was the MI 24th Reg that was added. Listen to these words:
Oct. 9th 1862 Camp near Sharpsburg:
"A fine new regiment has been added to our brigade. They are a splendid
looking body of men, entirely new to the service. It is the twenty-fourth
Michigan, commanded by Col. Henry A. Morrow. Their ranks are full now, they
are, as we were, crazy to fight."
Each Regiment was made up of 10 companies. A-K. Notice that is 11 letters.
I believe that the letter "J" was excluded because it could be confused with
"i".
Each company had 100 men plus their officers. 10 Companies x 100 men=one
Regiment of 1000 men + officers. 4 Regiments = one brigade or 4000 men +
officers.
Then ? Regiments = a what, Batalion or Division What??? Then so many of
something =an The Army of the Potomac or the Army of the ....West... was it?
So to answer your question, yes there would have been a Co. I in that MI
reg. If this particular Reg. interests you, there are 10 more references in
this book.
